Around 2011, I started experiencing back pain that progressively got worse. I was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in my lower back, along with slippage of my spine due to trauma from an accident. I couldn’t even walk without collapsing in pain. I had back surgery in March 2015. I headed back to the gym and discovered that I still couldn’t do high-impact activities like running or jumping. I was so out of shape! I would leave the gym feeling defeated, frustrated and depressed.
One day my husband told me about Amy opening up a CrossFit box and how I should go check it out. I thought he was insane for even thinking I would do CrossFit, but I decided to give it a try. I did my first WOD at Upper Limit on July 6, 2015. I remember that any fear or misconceptions I had about CrossFit would soon be replaced with excitement.
From the moment I arrived to the box, I was warmly greeted by Amy, Coach Brigham and Coach Fritts. I also remember wondering how in the world I would be able to do the workout and lift weights. I had always looked on with admiration at my husband and son working out and lifting heavy weights. I was so shy at first and felt I was being rude slamming weights on the ground. I was doubtful that I could lift heavy, and I had never worked out so hard in my life since giving birth!
A little over a year later and now a grandmother, I’m still going strong. I went from using a PVC pipe for strength training to being able to deadlift 220 lbs. and kicking butt during metcons. I also slam the weights on the ground and shout when I need to dig deep and grind it out. Not bad for a 40-something grandma who once had severe back issues!
I absolutely love CrossFit, Amy, our magnificent coaches and the athletes at Upper Limit. My husband and son Jacob now work out alongside me, and I couldn’t be happier. We push each other to grind hard and never give up. I love the camaraderie, meeting new people and being challenged with every workout. I look forward to going to the box and get cranky if I have to miss.
Last and certainly not least, I’m very grateful for coaches, Amy, Brigham and Fritts for believing in me and teaching me all the new and cool stuff that I once thought I could never do. I even participated in my first athletic competition in May of 2016.
My wife and I have been members of the gym for two months now. The entire coaching staff is super supportive, helping us develop our skills. They don’t just stand there and tell you, “This is the exercise, do it!” but instead take the time to get to know each member, their capabilities, and more important, their limitations. They then structure the program to maximize your opportunities, and minimize or eliminate your obstacles. We have repeatedly left at the end of a workout saying “I wasn’t sure if I could do that, but I did it, because they helped me do it.” I am proud to belong to this gym.
Take charge of your health, what have you got to lose?
I have been to quite a few gyms in the past several years, and CrossFit Upper Limit has put the fun and variety back into my workouts. Amy and the other coaches are wonderful. I am still new and find that everyone is very helpful and I don’t feel intimidated at all. Give CrossFit Upper Limit a try, you will love it!
